Harbor Seals
Kayak or boat near these playful seals. There are numerous seal rookeries located near Zachar Bay Lodge, the closest being less than a mile away. Often there will be up to forty seals laying up on the rocks basking in the sun.

Stellar Sea Lions
The Stellar Sea Lion is huge! They can reach weights up to 1200 pounds and make the seals look tiny. There is a sea lion rookery less than an hour boat ride from the lodge.

Sea Otters
Kodiak Island has been known historically for the amount of sea otters that live in the waters. Russians first settled Kodiak to harvest the lucsious pelts, but now otters are protected and as plentiful as ever.

River Otters and Beavers can also be seen swimming along the shoreline. Watch a family of feisty river otter play right off the lodge dock. Most of the animals have a carefree and lackadaisical attitude, which make them fun and enjoyable to watch.

Kodiak Island unique is the large populations of marine mammals such as seals, sea lions and otter. Zachar Bay has a seal estuary right within its boundaries, and an occasional sea lion will swim through the bay in search of salmon. Sea otters drift in and out with the tide and ocean currents, and there can be pods from 50 to 100 animals.
