Kodiak Island, Alaska

Testimonials

"Dear Linda and Marty,

I have just come back from my second August visit to you. I would just like to thank you again for another marvellous week with all of you. As you know, I am a very keen on fishing with flies and I have also been fishing in Norway, Island, Spain and Greenland. Never have I experienced such a fantastic fishing as with Zachar Bay The fishing is just like the one a sport fisherman does in his best dreams at night. As you will have learned, I am rather lazy on household things and I do like to have comfort outside fishing hours. Living in tents is not my big deal. Therefore I have really appreciated the way you are treating your guests. The cabins are real nice, the cooking is outstanding and the service of the staff and you owners could not be better. I have pictures of my salmons in Zachar river in my office, on my computer, and in the house that makes me never forget the fishing experience with you these two last years.

Thanks again, all of you."

"Our stay at Zachar Bay Lodge in September of 2000 was one of the highlights of our 2+ weeks in Alaska. Not being fishermen, we didn't know what to expect but were very happy with what you were able to offer us. Each day was a new experience, with opportunities to view different wildlife and scenery popping up around each new bend in the waterways. In hind sight, I wish I had tried the fishing because the other guests seemed to really be excite with their experiences. It was a wonderful experience."

" The accommodations and food are wonderful, but what really made our stay at Zachar Bay memorable was the terrific staff. The guides were very helpful and the staff at the lodge very accommodating. The River Rafting trip was fantastic. Beautiful scenery, unbelievable fishing and the thrill of the rapids. It was the most fun experience we have had in Alaska. The entire staff provided us a great week of fishing, sightseeing, and wonderful food. We'll keep coming back."

"Dear Friends at the Zachar Bay Lodge,

I haven't written in quite some time....May 30th, 1999, to be exact. I'm not quite so sure that you'll even remember us at this point, but we remember you! (Don and Liz Altman). We were honeymooning up there, and caught the Kodiaks mating on film! If I (Liz) wasn't on my honeymoon, I would have stayed in Alaska like so many of the people we met there.I hope you are all doing well, Clyde, too! I HAVE to come back again! I miss you all like long, lost relatives and sometimes when I think of this phrase, it reminds me of you...."No distance of place nor lapse of time can ever dissever the friendship of people who are thoroughly convinced of each others worth." Our stay with you all will last a lifetime in memories, but I want to create some new ones, too Send us an email anytime......We hope the winter wasn't too harsh for you, and wish you lots of love!!!"

"I have been coming to Alaska for my vacation every year for the past five years. My first trip I tried to see everything I could by flying into Anchorage and then driving to Denali, Glennallen, Valdez, and the Kenai peninsula. It was great seeing all these areas but it didn't leave much time for what I really wanted to do in Alaska which was to fish.

My second trip I decided to concentrate only on fishing. I spent part of my time in Valdez and the rest on the Kenai river near Soldotna. This is where I found out what combat fishing was like. I decided after that I was going to find a place that was not accessible by roads to get away from the crowds.

I wanted to be able to fish for salmon and halibut but not have to take a long boat ride to get to the halibut. I did some research in the Alaska State Planner and found Zachar Bay Lodge on Kodiak Island.

It fit the bill for what I wanted in my vacation. It was remote with fly in access only. Halibut and salmon fishing was done close to the lodge and many times right in the same bay the lodge was in. I could also fish both fresh water rivers and saltwater for salmon. There was also plenty of wildlife to see while fishing in these remote areas. That first trip to Zachar Bay sold me. I came in the first week of July in 1998 and caught pink salmon until my arms hurt. I caught pinks in Zachar bay from the shore, chums in the Zachar river, and halibut in the bay and adjacent bays. I also did a couple of fly outs to the Frazer river to watch bears and a fly out to Uganik lake for pinks. The meals were incredible and everyone makes you feel at home during your stay.

After that trip all my vacations to Alaska have been to Zachar Bay. The following year I came out in late August to fish for silvers and halibut and was not disappointed. Last year I decided to try for kings and reds and visited in late June. I tried fly fishing for the first time on this trip and came away with plenty of bear stories.

I have already booked my trip for this year (fourth time) to Zachar Bay for early September. I'm looking forward to doing some more silver and halibut fishing and also to try fly fishing for silvers in the Zachar river."

What was the highlight of your trip?

The highlight was getting two kings in 15 minutes. I leave (left) with nothing on my wish list. The new plane is wonderful, a great addition. So is having John King come aboard. - Larry Reardon

It’s like a little family. We were always teasing and having fun and catching lots of fish! - Michael Reardon

The sea lions and puffins were what I enjoyed most. - Peggy Padgett

The thing that has struck me more than anything else is the strong sense of family. - Al Padgett

The thing that was the biggest surprise to me was the weather. We had perfect weather. The variety of activities was nice like fishing, rafting and kayaking. The rafting was a whole new experience for us. - Len Slonevsky

It’s the quietest place I’ve ever been! They have really good food too. - Hara Slonevsky

I’ll tell my friends how fantastic the fishing and food was. (The thing that stuck out most) was the nice people. - Corky Parson

The reds were fun. I finally learned how to catch them. The reds were the highlight – I’ll come back just for the reds. The bears were fantastic at Frazer. - Rocky Parson

The highlight of the trip for me was finding the reds in such quantity. I caught my first red this year. I also saw bear and (my wife) Paulette didn’t! I’ve been to several of these places and nothing compares. You (the lodge) treat us like kings! - Reed Brooks

The animals and red salmon (were my favorite). - Helmet Meilner

Rafting - Konrad Dobler

The friendly people and good fishing (were most memorable). - Rich Wiley

I loved the people and the scenery. The friendliness of the lodge was beyond my expectations. - Ed McConnell

The food was good. - Edgar McConnell

The 85# halibut Travis caught. - Austin Wiley

I liked the food, fishing and activities – the whole place. - Travis Wiley

There was a lot of successful fishing – and a lot of lost fish. Darn! - Collin McConnell

I guess for me it was the interactions with the staff; you don’t just serve people, but you are involved and that shows in many ways. - Steve Oliver

The highlight for me was the hike we made from Larsen Bay to the Karluk River. I like it because it was the only real opportunity to hike. The wood scents and sights were glorious, and the other thing was the wildlife. We saw nesting ptarmigan running ahead faking broken wings, lots of other birds and a fox. - Brian O’Donnell

That was an awesome trip (Frazer). It was incredible – way incredible. The fish were so lively, jumping and rolling everywhere. I’d do that again! - Steve Beer

The fishing for the red was an awesome day . . . with the fish and the beautiful scenery. - Jared Beer

I think I’ll come back just for the weather. The sun bathing, humidity . . . (laughing). The highlight, even though it was supposed to be fishing, was the beauty of the country. (You ) don’t really appreciate Alaska until you visit. - Allen Alspektor

Camby was my favorite. She was friendly, playful – just a great dog! - Travis Beer

Catching fish until my arm hurt. That’s never happened before!! - John Henry Jr.

The sea otters were lovely – very hilarious. - Christine Johnson

All okay. Very happy here. It’s nice. Fishing, ok; kitchen, ok; people friendly. We were very happy to be here. - Hans Pfeiffer

Bears! Bears! Bears!! Friendly people. We were very welcome. It was a real pleasure to be here. - Svetlana Zaporojski

First cast I caught a king (on the Karluk). - Ruthanne Pitts

Probably our first day halibut fishing because we caught so many fish . . . and of course I caught an 85#. Also the expression on Brenda’s face when a bear came within 40 yards. - Bill Pitts

The highlight was catching my 95# halibut. - Brenda Fraim

What I enjoyed most was the variety (of fishing options). - Charles Fraim

Didn’t realize the Karluk River was so wide. Don’t know why any one would want to fish anywhere else – fishing and bear viewing. Everything in one spot! It’s very peaceful and simple – it sort of gets you back to the basics of how to survive. Can’t imagine this place in the wintertime. It’s also untouched and untamed. - Jeff Sanford

Two highlights: very nice crew and this time was better arranged – flights in and out. (Saw) king of the mountain (Zachar River) – huge male bear completely scuffed over its whole body. I think it’s never been seen before. - Trudy Horbach

Catching a king on the fly. - John Erkman

At Frazer when John was cleaning fish and he told me to watch his back. A bear came out to catch the carcasses as they floated down the river. I don’t think there is another spot like it – where you can “coexist” with bears while fishing. Had no person telling you to stay on a platform, be quiet, don’t chew gum, don’t move. It was very nice. - Jane Erkman

I enjoyed the halibut fishing – as far as fishing. We enjoyed the bears (sarcastically ?) and the 1 ½ hike to a stream with no fish. The hospitality and food was good. - Vern Larsen

You guys. It’s been nice because it’s run by a family. Also the wondering what was going to happen the next day. It was a real adventure. - Janet Larsen

All: bear, sea otters, seals. - Loic Poidevin

Kindness and the cooking. - Frederique Arthuis

It’s worth the trip up here just to eat! Catching the halibut – that was a new experience. Seeing the bear up that close. - Charles Kutcher

My highlight was seeing the bears and looking down in the eagle’s nest. It has always been a dream of mine to look down inside of a nest. The ride in the plane was too. My dad flew an ultra-light so the ride out here was real meaningful (as I remembered him). - Cheryl Kutcher

(What I’ll remember most is) The fear that swept over me when Glen said, “I’m not going to lie to you – it’s going to be rough!” - Rod Russel

My arms and back was sore from catching all those dollies. The harpooning and gunfight of the monster halibut (was memorable too). - Jim Bailey
