June is the start to our fishing season on Kodiak. Halibut are hungry and begin the ascent to the shallower waters to feed on the plentiful herring and feeder fish. King salmon and red salmon make their migration to their native streams to start the spawning process. This is an ideal time for halibut fishing and saltwater salmon trolling – there tends to be tight lines and happy fisherman.

If fishing rivers or lakes is more your ideal, plan on flying-out to one of our fishing locations to try your luck with red salmon, dolly varden and rainbow trout. Although it is typically known for being a finicky striker, the red salmon we fish are more aggressive and it is not uncommon to land your limit with some patience. Pound for pound, the red salmon is a powerful opponent on the fly or small spinner. Red salmon are the most sought after species by Alaskans for the dinner table.

Daytime temperatures in June average 50 degrees, and drops to about 40 degrees in the evening. The wind and high humidity levels in June make it feel much colder – so plan on dressing warm and dry. Rain and fog are not uncommon – creating perfect fishing atmosphere for the avid fisher. June is a popular time among our clients that enjoy halibut fishing, and also those that love to catch red salmon on the fly – so plan to book well in advance.
